Chapter Sixteen

Ten minutes of running through downtown Seattle wasn’t a long time, but to Charles, days had passed. The more buildings he put between them and the Warfighter Games headquarters, the better. Each time he looked back, the sight of the Fosk-ha ship towering above the WFG compound made him want to cry.

He was out of breath. A stitch in his side stabbed him every time one of his feet hit the ground. Halloran, by contrast, was getting his second wind even though he looked like crap. Anna looked tired and rumpled—something Charles had been starting to think was impossible.

“What kind of car do we need?” Charles panted.

Sweating bullets, Halloran divided his attention between answering the question and finding a vehicle. He wasn’t panicking yet but was as close as someone like him could be to it. “Anything we can start.”

Charles stopped next to a bright blue Volkswagen Beetle, definitely an antique. The keys were in the ignition. “Be careful what you wish for. I think I’ve got something.”

“Nice.” Halloran opened the door, climbed in, barely fitting with all of his gear in the way, and started the vehicle. “Can you drive a stick shift?”

“Everyone in my family can drive a stick,” Charles said defensively.

“Get in.”

Seconds later, they headed back toward the Warfighter Games compound.

“When I get out to grab Perez, you climb over to the driver seat, fast as you can. And get ready, Red Anna, it’s going to be crowded back here.”

“Don’t call me that,” she said, shifting like she couldn’t get comfortable.

What he meant, Charles thought, was that Perez was going to bleed everywhere and Anna needed to stop adjusting her outfit and primping her luxurious hair.

“Do you understand me?”

She nodded. “I know about blood. And death, unfortunately. We all do now, don’t we?”

The security chief turned away without answering, checking his gear for the tenth time—little touches to be sure his pistol was still in the drop holster and his magazines were ready to use.

The practice was called “indexing.” Everyone on the game design team knew what it was, cops and commandos touching their weapons to increase the likelihood their hand would find it during a crisis. Boring details like that gave Charles pause these days.

As Halloran spun the Volkswagen out of the financial district, Charles felt lightheaded. They drove past burning buildings—trying to ignore shapes that ran between demolished cars or darted into alleys. Ravagers were everywhere but stayed hidden from fast-moving jump ships that shot indiscriminately into buildings, walking parks, and city streets.

The attack ships and Fosk-ha death squads were two blocks away, destroying other districts, but something was in the air here that made him want to run away. The day of the invasion had been bad enough. Fighting back would probably destroy what was left of human civilization. Dark thoughts swam to the surface of his mind, surprising him with the amount of detail he’d put into them without realizing that was what he was doing.

One wrong turn would put them in the middle of hell.
